Sustainable Workspaces have been awarded £40k pledge by the Mayor of London for our crowdfunding campaign on Spacehive.

James Byrne pitching at City Hall and revealing Mayor of London's £40k pledge.

James Byrne pitching at City Hall and revealing Mayor of London's £40k pledge.

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London has been putting in money via Crowdfund London programme on Spacehive. Spacehive is an online crowdfunding platform for community spaces. Over 200 projects across London were submitted and only 78 were verified by the Mayor’s Regeneration team. Only 25 projects received funding from the Mayor and we are proud to be one of these projects.

As part of the Spacehive Crowdfund London Pitch and Pledge event held at City Hall, James Byrne pitched the Sustainable Bankside Sustainable Food Hub project. After the pitch, James had to press the big red button, when it was revealed that we have received the £40k pledge by the Mayor of London.

Alongside the Mayor, waste management experts, Veolia has also pledged £500 to our campaign, which complements our existing donations of equipment from several large organisations who prefer to remain anonymous.

We have seen a growing number of sustainable food startups in our community. These include start-ups reducing food waste along the food chain, creating new products using food that would otherwise go to waste, reducing food packaging and creating new local food production systems.

To continue supporting these start-ups we spend time understanding the needs and challenges in setting up business in a central London location.

As we work towards launching our second workspace in Sustainable Bankside, we are co-designing with our community a food hub dedicated to sustainable food innovation.

This includes a food yard, kitchen and event space. The space will be dedicated to demonstrating urban food growing. Our plans are ambitious and the new space will hold 50 events with over 10,000 visitors per annum engaged with sustainable innovation. This will allow us to facilitate a space for our community of start-ups to do their advocacy and outreach activity.
